Martlets Hospice Hove East Sussex

The Martlets is a hospice facility serving the Brighton & Hove area. The existing entrance, bedrooms, care facility, consultation rooms, and cafeteria were demolished. During the major refurbishment and new construction, all residents and staff had to vacate the premises.

Two new blocks were constructed to provide additional bedrooms, care and nursing facilities and new administration offices.  Much of the existing building was refurbished and required significant structural alterations to provide the new layouts for an open plan entrance, gym, and roof connections from old to new.  The new blocks were of a traditional construction on strip foundations, masonry walls, beam and block and hollow core concrete planks at flat roof and first floor levels.

The hospice negotiated a lease for additional land to the northern boundary, owned by the NHS Trust, which required significant works including drainage diversions, soakaways, excavation and reinforced blockwork retaining walls to protect landscaped areas.  Footpaths were installed through planted areas and the memorial gardens were finished with resin bound gravel.
