Bistrot Pierre Eastbourne East Sussex

Following demolition of the existing café, a new restaurant of contemporary design comprising a large dining area, kitchen and back of house facilities has been constructed.

The site is in a prominent exposed coastal position in an environmentally sensitive location within Eastbourne Town Centre and Seafront Conservation Area, adjacent to the ‘Wish Tower’, one of the seventy-four Martello Towers built along the south coast between Folkestone and Seaford to defend against Napoleon in the early 1800s.

Substructure comprised mass fill concrete strip and pad foundations with a reinforced ground bearing slab.  The superstructure is steel frame with a cantilevered canopy; Metsec/SFS internal leaf construction with Cement Particle board externally and ply internally.  Doors, windows and curtain walling are aluminium with timber framing and Siberian larch cladding.

Substantial changes to the original routes for services were required for services upgrading.  Coordination works included the de-commissioning of the main local electrical substation, the provision of temporary power and the construction and recommissioning of a new substation without interruption to the site activities or neighbouring businesses.

The site was set up to ensure safe access for delivery vehicles and included the installation of a temporary crash barrier positioned at the top of the five-metre promenade wall.  Groundworks and civil engineering were carried out by the company’s in-house department.
